The Humvee, or High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), was developed by AM General to give the U.S. military a highly mobile and adaptable light tactical vehicle. Entering service in the 1980s, it replaced several older vehicle types and quickly became one of the most recognizable wheeled vehicles in U.S. Army service. Its combination of off-road capability, payload flexibility, and mechanical simplicity made it suitable for a wide range of roles.

Soft-top Humvee variants such as troop and infantry transport versions were widely used for moving personnel, supplies, and light equipment in the field. These vehicles were especially useful for unit transport, liaison duties, base support, and convoy operations where mobility and versatility were more important than heavy armor.
