Vehicle History

The AMX-13 was developed in France after World War II as a lightweight, highly mobile armored vehicle suitable for reconnaissance and anti-tank operations. Its most recognizable feature was its oscillating turret, in which the upper turret section moved with the gun. The compact vehicle carried a three-person crew and combined a relatively powerful 75 mm gun with a lightweight tracked chassis.

Israel acquired AMX-13 tanks during the 1950s and employed them as light tanks and tank destroyers. Israeli AMX-13 units saw combat during the 1956 Sinai Campaign and the 1967 Six-Day War, where their mobility and firepower were useful despite the vehicle’s comparatively light armor. AMX-13s armed with 75 mm guns served in several Israeli battalions during the Six-Day War.
