Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a U.S. Army Ford Model T ambulance in a weathered Olive Drab finish. The vehicle features an open driving compartment with a simple bench seat, steering wheel, slender canopy supports, and a tan canvas roof extending over the enclosed medical body. Its narrow hood, upright radiator, rounded fenders, large headlights, and finely spoked wheels capture the lightweight construction of the early Model T chassis.

The box-style patient compartment includes side and rear access panels, a rear observation opening with rolled canvas cover, side-mounted spare wheel, medical markings, and exterior storage equipment. Additional details include tool and supply boxes, canisters, lamps, running boards, suspension components, and delicate steering linkages. Red Cross emblems, U.S. Army medical insignia, unit markings, and restrained dust and road wear complete its Western Front service appearance.

Vehicle History

The Ford Model T ambulance combined the standard Model T automobile chassis with a lightweight wooden medical body designed to transport wounded personnel over poor roads near the front. Its four-cylinder engine produced approximately 20 horsepower, and the patient compartment could accommodate three litters or four seated patients, with additional seating beside the driver.

After the United States entered World War I, Ford worked with the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office and personnel experienced with frontline ambulance service to develop a Model T configuration suited to battlefield conditions. Ford produced 5,745 ambulances for the Allied Powers and another 107 for the Red Cross, making the small, maneuverable Model T an important part of wartime medical evacuation on the Western Front.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
