Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a U.S. Army M4A1 half-track mortar carrier in a weathered Olive Drab finish. Based on the shorter M2 half-track chassis, the open-topped vehicle carries a rear-facing 81 mm M1 mortar within its armored crew compartment. The model features sloped engine armor, louvered radiator protection, raised armored windshield shutters, rounded front fenders, a detailed front winch assembly, and the characteristic combined wheeled-and-tracked running gear.

The exposed interior includes the elevated mortar mounting, crew seating, ammunition and equipment stowage, a forward Browning machine gun, and two tall radio antennas. Exterior details include side-mounted fuel cans, pioneer tools, grab rails, storage boxes, bundled equipment, rear mud flaps, lights, and towing hardware. White recognition stars and authentic vehicle markings complement the faded Olive Drab paint, while dust, grime, worn edges, and restrained rust tones give the vehicle a convincing field-used appearance.

Vehicle History

The M4A1 81 mm Mortar Carrier was an improved version of the M4, developed on the compact M2 half-track chassis to provide mechanized units with mobile indirect-fire support. Its principal weapon was the 81 mm M1 mortar, mounted facing toward the rear of the vehicle. Compared with the earlier M4, the M4A1 incorporated a reinforced floor and an elevated mounting that provided a limited traversing arc and allowed the mortar to be fired routinely from inside the vehicle. Ammunition compartments along the hull carried mortar bombs close to the crew and weapon.

Approximately 600 M4A1 mortar carriers were manufactured by the White Motor Company during 1943. Powered by a White 160AX six-cylinder gasoline engine, the vehicle could reach approximately 45 mph on roads. Although the M4A1 gave armored and mechanized formations valuable mobile fire support, its rear-facing mortar arrangement complicated rapid engagement of targets. This limitation contributed to the development of the later M21 Mortar Motor Carriage, which placed an 81 mm mortar on the larger M3 half-track chassis.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
