About the Real Thing

The M60A1 was an improved version of the American M60 main battle tank and became one of the most recognizable U.S. tanks of the Cold War. Introduced in the early 1960s, it featured a redesigned turret with improved armor protection, a 105 mm main gun, and upgrades intended to keep American armored units competitive during a period of rapid tank development.

M60A1 tanks served for decades with U.S. Army and Marine Corps units, as well as with many allied nations. During the Cold War, they formed a major part of NATO armored strength and were commonly seen in olive green or later camouflage finishes depending on unit, period, and operating environment. Their combination of firepower, mobility, and reliability made them a key bridge between earlier Patton-series tanks and the later M1 Abrams generation.
