About the Real Thing

The M60A1 was an improved version of the American M60 main battle tank and became one of the key U.S. armored vehicles of the Cold War. It featured a redesigned turret, improved armor protection, and the 105 mm M68 main gun, giving it strong firepower against enemy armor and battlefield targets.

The M60A1 served widely with the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, as well as many allied nations. During the Cold War, it was a familiar sight in American armored units, especially in Europe, where NATO forces prepared to counter Warsaw Pact armored formations. Its combination of mobility, firepower, and protection made it an important bridge between earlier postwar tanks and later designs such as the M1 Abrams.

Although later replaced in front-line U.S. Army service by the Abrams, the M60A1 remained in service for many years in upgraded forms and with allied forces around the world.
