Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a U.S. Army M109A2 self-propelled howitzer in a combat-ready MERDC camouflage configuration. The model features its prominent long-barreled 155 mm howitzer with double-baffle muzzle brake, large enclosed turret, open crew hatches, and turret-mounted .50-caliber machine gun. Its green, brown, black, and light-colored disruptive camouflage is enhanced with realistic fading, grime, rust, and operational wear.

Extensive camouflage netting is wrapped around the gun barrel and secured across the turret, front hull, and rear corners. Additional details include turret-side equipment racks, crew stowage, tools, tow cables, headlights, rear stabilizing spades, seven-road-wheel suspension, and finely reproduced tracks. The elevated main gun and heavily equipped exterior give this release a distinctive field-deployed appearance.

Vehicle History

The M109 was developed to provide U.S. armored and mechanized formations with mobile 155 mm artillery support capable of keeping pace with tracked combat vehicles. The M109A2 incorporated numerous reliability and maintainability improvements, including the long-barreled M185 cannon in an improved mount, increased ammunition capacity, and revised external equipment. Production began in the late 1970s, with the first vehicles delivered in 1979.

M109A2 howitzers served extensively with U.S. Army field-artillery units during the later Cold War and provided protected, mobile indirect fire support from positions behind the front line. Vehicles of this period were commonly finished in MERDC camouflage, a standardized four-color system developed for adapting military equipment to different environments. The M109 family’s durable chassis and capacity for repeated modernization allowed later variants to remain central to American self-propelled artillery for decades.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
