About the Real Thing

The DUKW was an amphibious 2.5-ton truck developed during World War II to move supplies, troops, and equipment between ships, beaches, and inland staging areas. Based on the GMC 6x6 truck chassis, it combined road wheels with a watertight hull and marine propulsion, allowing it to operate both as a truck and as a small cargo-carrying boat.

British and Commonwealth forces used DUKWs extensively in the European Theater, especially after amphibious landings created a constant need to move supplies across beaches, rivers, flooded areas, and damaged port facilities. In Normandy and later Northwest Europe, DUKWs were valuable logistics vehicles because they could carry ammunition, fuel, food, medical supplies, and other cargo directly from landing craft or offshore vessels to units ashore. Their ability to transition from water to road made them one of the most practical support vehicles of the Allied advance.
