Vehicle History

The Centurion was a British-designed main battle tank recognized for its strong armor, effective suspension, and adaptable design. Israel began acquiring Centurions in 1959 and designated them Sho’t, meaning “whip.” Beginning around 1970, the Israel Defense Forces introduced the Sho’t Kal modernization, replacing the original Rolls-Royce Meteor gasoline engine and transmission with a Continental AVDS-1790 diesel engine and Allison CD-850 automatic transmission. The conversion improved reliability, fuel economy, operating range, and parts compatibility with Israel’s American-built tanks while creating the distinctive raised rear engine deck.

Armed with the powerful 105 mm L7 main gun, the Sho’t Kal became an important part of Israel’s armored forces. These tanks saw extensive combat during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, fighting Egyptian forces in the Sinai and Syrian armored formations on the Golan Heights. Israeli Centurion crews played a particularly prominent role in the intense defensive battles on the Golan, where the Sho’t Kal’s firepower, mobility, and ability to operate effectively over difficult terrain helped establish it as one of the best-known Israeli tanks of the conflict.
