Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a German 8.8 cm Flak 18 heavy anti-aircraft gun in a weathered desert-yellow finish associated with the Afrika Korps. The sand-colored coating is complemented by darker equipment, tires, canvas covers, dust, chipped edges, rust-toned wear, and subtle grime across the gun mount and transport carriage.

The long 88 mm barrel is mounted behind a large armored gun shield with authentic equipment markings. Fine details include the recoil mechanism, breech assembly, aiming handwheels, circular operator seats, barrel travel support, cable reels, four-wheel transport bogies, fenders, towing eye, stabilizing equipment, and canvas-covered field stowage.

Vehicle History

The 8.8 cm Flak 18 was the first production version of the famous German “88.” Developed as a heavy anti-aircraft gun, it entered service in 1933 and combined a high-velocity 88 mm barrel with a semi-automatic breech and a mounting capable of engaging aircraft at high elevation. The gun was transported on the Sonderanhänger 201 carriage and could be deployed on a stabilized firing platform.

Although designed for air defense, its high velocity, long range, and powerful ammunition also made it highly effective against armored and other ground targets. The Afrika Korps used 88 mm Flak guns extensively during the North African Campaign, where examples served in both anti-aircraft and anti-tank roles, including during the fighting around El Alamein.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
