Model Overview

A Ready-Made 1:87 / HO scale Artitec German 88 mm Flak 18 in a heavily weathered winter whitewash finish. This highly detailed model depicts the famous German heavy anti-aircraft gun mounted on its wheeled transport carriage, making it an excellent addition to winter artillery batteries, military convoys, towing scenes, and World War II dioramas.

The model features the Flak 18’s long 88 mm barrel, recoil mechanism, protective gun shield, elevation and traverse controls, operator seats, handwheels, cable reels, and detailed transport bogies. The irregular whitewash is heavily chipped and worn, exposing the dark gray base finish beneath. Dirt, grime, rust-toned edges, weathered tires, and tarp-covered equipment create a convincing field-service appearance.

Vehicle History

The 8.8 cm Flak 18 was the first production version of the German weapon family commonly known to Allied troops as the “88.” Introduced during the 1930s, it was designed primarily as a heavy anti-aircraft gun capable of engaging aircraft at high altitude. The name Flak was derived from the German term for an anti-aircraft cannon.

The gun was carried on a wheeled transport system and deployed on a cruciform firing platform that provided all-around traverse. Although large and complex in appearance, it could be moved by a heavy tractor and repositioned with the artillery or anti-aircraft units it supported.

Its high-velocity 88 mm gun also proved highly effective in direct fire against tanks, fortified positions, and other ground targets. This versatility made the 88 one of Germany’s best-known multipurpose weapons of World War II, serving as a heavy anti-aircraft gun, anti-tank weapon, and conventional artillery piece.

The worn winter finish represented by this model depicts temporary white camouflage applied over a darker base coat. Chipping, handling, dirt, and exposure gradually allowed the original dark finish to show through, producing the irregular field-used appearance seen on the model.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in service. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
