Model Overview

This Ready-Made Artitec model depicts a Sherman M4A4 fitted with the distinctive Crab mine-clearing flail used by British and American forces during World War II. The model retains the Sherman’s 75 mm gun turret while adding the large front-mounted rotor, support arms, and numerous chains designed to strike and detonate buried mines ahead of the vehicle.

The model is individually assembled and hand-painted in an olive drab finish with realistic weathering across the hull, tracks, running gear, turret, and flail mechanism. Detailed stowage, tools, turret equipment, machine gun, antennas, and Allied markings create a heavily equipped combat-engineering vehicle suitable for D-Day, Normandy, and Western Front scenes.

Vehicle History

The Sherman Crab was a mine-clearing adaptation of the M4A4 Sherman developed for British forces during World War II. A powered rotor mounted ahead of the hull carried rows of heavy chains that struck the ground as it turned, detonating mines before the tank and vehicles following it reached them. Unlike earlier systems requiring a separate engine, the Crab’s flail was powered by the Sherman’s main engine, reducing the vehicle’s width and vulnerability.

Sherman Crabs were employed during the Normandy landings and subsequent operations in northwestern Europe. The flail arms could be raised or lowered to follow uneven ground, while chalk dispensers marked cleared lanes through minefields for following troops and vehicles. Although primarily associated with British armored engineering units, Sherman Crab vehicles also supported American operations.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
