Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a U.S. Army M4 High Speed Tractor in a weathered Olive Drab finish. The tracked artillery prime mover features its broad enclosed cab, sloped front windows with windshield wipers, side mirrors, large mesh ventilation grilles, and tan-brown cab panels. A circular roof ring carries a .50-caliber M2 Browning heavy machine gun, while the raised rear compartment is protected by a fitted canvas cover with realistically reproduced seams, folds, and fastening points.

Fine exterior details include pioneer tools secured across the roof, a rolled cover, access hatches, lights, towing fittings, rear ventilation panels, and a fully reproduced tracked chassis. The suspension includes large end wheels, paired road-wheel bogies, sharply molded track links, and visible return components. White recognition stars, U.S. Army markings, warning stenciling, and small identification panels complement the muted finish, while dust, fading, grime, track wear, and restrained rust give the tractor a convincing field-used appearance.

Vehicle History

The M4 High Speed Tractor was developed by Allis-Chalmers to provide the U.S. Army with a powerful tracked prime mover capable of keeping heavy artillery mobile during mechanized operations. Approved for service in 1942 and built using running-gear concepts derived from the M2 light tank, it could tow weapons including the 90 mm M1 antiaircraft gun, 155 mm M1 “Long Tom,” and 8-inch M1 howitzer. The vehicle carried its driver, an artillery crew, equipment, and ammunition while a roof-mounted .50-caliber M2 Browning provided defensive armament.

The approximately 18-ton tractor could reach about 35 mph and carried eleven passengers in addition to its driver. Allis-Chalmers began production in 1943, and more than 5,800 M4 tractors were completed before production ended in 1945. The type remained in U.S. military service into the postwar period and was later supplied to several allied countries.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
