Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a U.S. Army M4 High Speed Tractor configured for unloading heavy artillery ammunition. The tracked prime mover features its broad enclosed cab, sloped front windows, side mirrors, large mesh ventilation grilles, and tan-brown access doors. A circular roof ring carries a .50-caliber M2 Browning heavy machine gun, while several side doors are shown open to reveal the dark interior compartments.

The rear ammunition compartment is opened for unloading, with its canvas cover folded back and the rear-mounted lifting crane extended above the vehicle. A suspended chain hoist, lowered rear platform, open storage sections, and exposed equipment areas create a distinctive working configuration. Additional details include pioneer tools secured across the roof, a rolled cover, access hatches, headlights, towing fittings, rear warning stenciling, and fully reproduced tracked running gear. White recognition stars and U.S. Army markings complement the weathered Olive Drab finish, with dust, grime, worn edges, track discoloration, and restrained rust.

Vehicle History

The M4 High Speed Tractor was developed by Allis-Chalmers as a tracked prime mover for the U.S. Army’s heavy artillery. Approved for service in 1942, it could tow weapons such as the 90 mm M1 antiaircraft gun, 155 mm M1 “Long Tom,” and 8-inch M1 howitzer while transporting the gun crew, ammunition, and equipment across difficult terrain. A roof-mounted .50-caliber M2 Browning machine gun provided defensive armament.

M4 tractors configured for heavier artillery used a large rear ammunition compartment and a permanently mounted crane to assist with loading and unloading heavy projectiles. The approximately 18-ton vehicle could reach around 35 mph, and more than 5,800 examples were produced between 1943 and 1945. The type remained in U.S. service after World War II and was later supplied to allied nations.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
