Model Overview

One postman is posed standing beside his bicycle with mail in hand, while the second is seated and ready to continue his delivery route. Both bicycles feature large front-mounted P.T.T. postal boxes, rear racks, fine wheel detailing, and realistic utility-bike frames.

Historical Context

The Dutch PTT was the national organization responsible for postal, telegraph, and telephone services for much of the twentieth century. Postal workers commonly used sturdy utility bicycles fitted with large front-mounted boxes to carry letters and small parcels through towns and residential neighborhoods. The PTT name became official in 1928 and remained associated with Dutch postal service until the late twentieth century.

The dark uniform, peaked cap, delivery bicycles, and tall red pillar post box represented in this set are especially appropriate for Dutch scenes from the 1950s and early 1960s. Similar traditional post boxes remained in service until they were replaced by newer two-compartment designs introduced during the 1960s, while period PTT uniforms retained the formal jacket, trousers, cap, shirt, and tie.
