Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a Lanz LD civilian tractor in a dark green finish with weathered red wheels. The machine features a long enclosed engine compartment, large spoked rear wheels, smaller front steering wheels, an open operator’s position, and a broad protective canopy.

Vehicle History

The Lanz LD was a large German tractor built in limited numbers during 1916 and 1917. Only 84 examples were produced. During World War I, the type served as a military towing tractor, where its power made it suitable for moving heavy artillery.

Beginning in 1919, surviving tractors were converted for civilian agricultural use. These conversions helped bring heavy mechanical power to farms at a time when motorized agricultural equipment was still relatively uncommon. Their enormous rear wheels, long engine housing, and heavy-duty construction reflected their origins as military towing machines rather than tractors designed solely for ordinary field work.

Lanz later became one of Germany’s best-known tractor manufacturers. The company’s Mannheim factory went on to produce the famous Lanz Bulldog line, and John Deere acquired Heinrich Lanz AG in 1956
