Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a German Wehrmacht Tiger I heavy tank in the camouflage associated with the 1943 Battle of Kursk. The vehicle features the Tiger’s tall, boxy hull, broad turret, rounded gun mantlet, and long 8.8 cm KwK 36 L/56 main gun with its distinctive double-baffle muzzle brake. Early-production details include the high drum-style commander’s cupola, open turret hatch, roof-mounted machine gun, single tall radio antenna, and rear-mounted Feifel air-cleaner assemblies.

Fine exterior details include tow cables, pioneer tools, spare track links, side fenders, engine-deck grilles, rear exhaust equipment, and the Tiger’s complex interleaved road-wheel suspension. German crosses complement the muted dark-yellow and green striped camouflage, while dust, grime, worn edges, track discoloration, and restrained rust create a convincing Eastern Front field-service appearance.

Vehicle History

The Tiger I was developed as Germany’s first operational heavy tank and entered service in 1942. Its defining feature was the powerful 8.8 cm KwK 36 main gun, capable of engaging enemy armor at long range, combined with thick frontal and side armor that offered strong protection by the standards of the period. The tank used a torsion-bar suspension with overlapping and interleaved road wheels, giving it a relatively smooth ride but creating a complex and maintenance-intensive running gear. Its large size, substantial weight, and demanding mechanical systems made it expensive to build and difficult to recover when disabled.

Tiger I tanks took part in the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, where they were assigned to German heavy-tank formations and used to support armored attacks against deeply prepared Soviet defenses. Their gun range, accuracy, and armor made them formidable opponents in open combat, but mines, mechanical failures, fuel consumption, difficult terrain, and limited numbers reduced their overall battlefield impact. Although the Tiger I gained an imposing reputation, its operational effectiveness depended heavily on maintenance, recovery support, experienced crews, and favorable tactical conditions.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
