Model Overview

This ready-made Artitec model reproduces a German Sd.Kfz. 165 Hummel self-propelled howitzer in a heavily worn winter-whitewash finish. The uneven white coating allows areas of the underlying beige and dark-yellow finish to remain visible, while grime, scratches, rust tones, exposed edges, and darkened running gear give the vehicle a convincingly field-used appearance. German cross markings are applied to the armored fighting compartment and rear hull.

The open-topped fighting compartment is fully modeled around the long 15 cm sFH 18/1 howitzer, with a detailed breech, recoil system, gun controls, crew positions, and interior stowage. Additional details include the raised front gun-travel support, draped canvas covers, side ventilation grilles, hull-mounted tools, open rear panels, rear-mounted spare road wheels, and individually weathered tracks and suspension components.

Vehicle History

The Sd.Kfz. 165 Hummel was a German self-propelled heavy howitzer developed to provide Panzer divisions with mobile artillery capable of accompanying armored formations. It mounted the 15 cm sFH 18/1 L/30 howitzer on the purpose-built Geschützwagen III/IV chassis, which combined elements of the Panzer III and Panzer IV. Relocating the engine toward the center of the chassis created space for the large, open-topped fighting compartment at the rear. A six-man crew operated the vehicle, which entered service in 1943 and remained in use through the end of World War II.

The Hummel provided powerful indirect-fire support while retaining the mobility needed to operate with German armored units. Its first major combat deployment came during the Battle of Kursk, after which it served on multiple fronts through 1945. Because the vehicle carried only a limited supply of ammunition internally, Hummel batteries were supported by dedicated ammunition-carrier versions built on the same chassis.

About Artitec Ready-Made Models

Artitec's Ready-Made models are handcrafted from high-quality resin and produced in limited runs. Each model is expertly preassembled, hand-painted, and often subtly weathered to recreate the appearance of a real vehicle in use. Because every model is finished by hand, small variations may occur, making each piece unique.

Artitec uses vacuum-cast resin to reproduce exceptionally fine, true-to-scale details that can be difficult to achieve with conventional manufacturing methods. Etched-brass parts are added where appropriate to capture delicate components and further enhance realism.

Each model is assembled, painted, and weathered by skilled specialists—a process requiring considerable time, precision, and experience. Artitec Ready-Made models are ideal for collectors seeking exceptional detail and realism without the time and effort required to build and finish a model kit.
